These girls walk, on average, six kilometers every day to attend class. From 2007-2012, FBF support provided noon-day meals for students who came from distant villages and stayed in Ouahigouya. Their parents were unable to provide lunches for their daughters and these girls had no other source of food to sustain them throughout the day. In 2012, another LMA partner in Europe provided essential financing for this project. However, this partner had to withdrew its support for this project in 2015 due to financial constraints. Thereafter, FBF reactivated the noon-day-meals project in an attempt to help fill the funding gap.</p></div> Fri, 27 Feb 2015 12:31:48 +0000 fbf 12 at https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org Classrooms for the Lycée Modern de l’Amitié in Yatenga https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org/index.php/projects/classrooms-for-lycee-modern-de-l-amitie-yatenga <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Classrooms for the Lycée Modern de l’Amitié in Yatenga</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>fbf</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2015-02-27T07:28:53-05:00" title="Friday, February 27, 2015 - 07:28" class="datetime">Fri, 02/27/2015 - 07:28</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <a href="/tags/neeed" hreflang="en">NEEED</a>, <a href="/tags/ouahigouya" hreflang="en">Ouahigouya</a>, <a href="/tags/yatenga" hreflang="en">Yatenga</a>, <a href="/tags/girls" hreflang="en">girls</a>, <a href="/tags/primary-school" hreflang="en">primary school</a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>As girls began graduating in increasing numbers from village primary schools in the Yatenga Province, Association NEEED saw the need to build a middle school. It appealed and secured funding from foreign donors, including the Friends of Burkina Faso, to pay the construction costs for building classrooms for its middle school, called the <em>Lycée Moderne de l’Amitié</em> (LMA), located just outside of Ouahigouya. In 2005, LMA enrolled its first students, thanks to the support of donors in the U.S. and in Germany. With a growing student population, NEEED appealed to donors several years later. Shortly thereafter, LMA received funding to double the number of classrooms to twelve. Today, in 2015, 685 students are attending this thriving, now combined middle-secondary school.</p></div> Fri, 27 Feb 2015 12:28:53 +0000 fbf 11 at https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org Primary School Construction in Northern Burkina Faso https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org/index.php/projects/primary-school-construction-northern-burkina-faso <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Primary School Construction in Northern Burkina Faso</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>fbf</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2015-02-27T07:25:37-05:00" title="Friday, February 27, 2015 - 07:25" class="datetime">Fri, 02/27/2015 - 07:25</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <a href="/index.php/tags/2012" hreflang="en">2012</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/dougouri" hreflang="en">Dougouri</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/koeneba" hreflang="en">Koénéba</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/neeed" hreflang="en">NEEED</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/ouidi" hreflang="en">Ouidi</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/talle-bouli" hreflang="en">Talle Bouli</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/primary-school" hreflang="en">primary school</a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The Burkinabe government strives to provide teachers wherever primary schools exist. In response to this incentive, villagers in the north of Burkina Faso have built over 300 primary schools out of mud and thatched roofs. Unfortunately, the government lacks resources to replace more than a few of these village schools with durable schools built with cement-block classrooms, metal roofs, doors, windows; latrines; deep bore wells, and pumps. Association NEEED is committed to replacing the “worst of the worst” of these schools with durable ones, as funds allow, in order to improve school environments. In 2012, FBF has contributed to the construction of primary schools in the villages of Dougouri Ouidi and Koénéba, thanks to a generous donor. In 2015, it was able to fund the construction of the primary school Talle Bouli, again thanks to a generous donor.</p></div> Fri, 27 Feb 2015 12:25:37 +0000 fbf 10 at https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org Literacy Through the Arts https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org/index.php/projects/literacy-through-arts <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Literacy Through the Arts</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>fbf</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2013-04-13T10:51:49-04:00" title="Saturday, April 13, 2013 - 10:51" class="datetime">Sat, 04/13/2013 - 10:51</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <a href="/index.php/tags/2013" hreflang="en">2013</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/lanfiera" hreflang="en">Lanfiera</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/peace-corps" hreflang="en">Peace Corps</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/education" hreflang="en">education</a>, <a href="/index.php/tags/primary-school" hreflang="en">primary school</a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>At the request of local leaders in Lanfiera, a PCV submitted a proposal to FBF to purchase books for the three primary schools in the village.  In 2013, FBF provided funding to buy books for these schools and also funded a teachers’ workshop. This program buys a lamb and school materials for a girl’s first year of school and requires her parents to 1) raise and sell the lamb at the end of the year to pay for their daughter’s school needs the following year and 2) use the proceeds from the sale of the lamb to purchase another lamb. This strategy enables parents to support their daughter’s education until the child completes her secondary school education. Since the inception of this project, FBF has supported the entrance into primary school of 3,571 girls. An impressive 88% of the girls have passed their national exams, qualifying them to go on to college (middle school). In addition to girls enrolled in the program, a big payoff from the <em>Lambs for School</em> initiative is increased awareness of the value of educating girls as well as boys in rural villages. Committed parents, NEEED’s encouragement and support, and the girls’ hard work have all contributed to the success of this program.</p></div> Mon, 27 Feb 2012 12:00:29 +0000 fbf 8 at https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org Water Pump at Primary School https://www.friendsofburkinafaso.org/index.php/projects/water-pump-at-primary-school <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Water Pump at Primary School</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>fbf</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2009-04-13T10:55:03-04:00" title="Monday, April 13, 2009 - 10:55" class="datetime">Mon, 04/13/2009 - 10:55</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <a href="/tags/2009" hreflang="en">2009</a>, <a href="/tags/koukouldi" hreflang="en">Koukouldi</a>, <a href="/tags/peace-corps" hreflang="en">Peace Corps</a>, <a href="/tags/primary-school" hreflang="en">primary school</a>, <a href="/tags/water" hreflang="en">water</a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The community of Koukouldi acquired a deep bore well at the local primary school, thanks to PCV activism and FBF financial support in 2009.
