Eligibility

A person from Burkina Faso; a former Peace Corps (PC) volunteer who served in Burkina Faso; or a person with extraordinary connections to Burkina Faso.

Criteria to qualify

A person who is responsible for significantly advancing peace in Burkina Faso and/or the world; and/or responsible for significantly advancing one or more of the Peace Corps’ three goals: helping meet development needs; helping to promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; and helping to promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. Additional criteria include: promotion of religious and cultural acceptance; promotion of peaceful leadership; and promotion of cooperation and unity among different political actors and views.

Goal of Award

Improve the image of Friends of Burkina Faso (FBF); end war, have peace. Promote and publicly recognize achievement of the PC’s three goals as applied to BF and to launch FBF to the forefront of that effort. Peace is a concept, a vision, and a goal shared between individuals the world over, a collective aspiration that can focus our energies on this generation and the next, supporting and fulfilling our potential with confidence, freedom, and peace of mind. And yet, while we aspire to peace, we are also vulnerable to strife and conflict, caused among ourselves or seen among neighbors.

It is true we can never forget the hardship that surrounds us; the trying stories in print or on screen, whether from near or afar, that remind us we all are implicated in some way. But, we cannot let these scenarios weigh us down or lose sight of an ideal world. Rather, there is always need to inspire, recognize and lift up those that are promoting peace.

The Friends of Burkina Faso Award for Peace is given every two years to an individual representing the best of one of the three goals of the United States Peace Corps. She or he has made a significant contribution in a powerful and innovative way to advance development in Burkina Faso, or the growth of cross-cultural understanding in the service of peace. She or he is a Burkinabe, a returned Peace Corps volunteer having served in Burkina Faso, or one who holds close ties to the country of Burkina Faso in extraordinary ways.

The Friends of Burkina Faso Award for Peace is established to recognize the contributions of individuals at all levels, to provide support and motivation to those individuals, and to raise powerful examples of good works for others to see and from which to be inspired.
